In terms of which materials this process is useful for, the rule of thumb is, if you can burn it, you can probably cut or engrave it. If you can’t burn it, you can probably still engrave it, so materials such as glass, stone, or ceramics can be successfully engraved but not cut. In some circumstances its possible to do a chemical etch on metal surfaces as well.
